Welcome to Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial at Gamble Plantation Historic State Park

Welcome to the captivating Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial at Gamble Plantation Historic State Park. This historical gem boasts the former residence of Major Robert Gamble and served as the nerve center of a thriving sugar plantation. Standing as the singular surviving plantation house in South Florida, it holds a significant place in history. Rumored to have provided sanctuary to Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin following the Confederacy’s collapse until his journey to safety in England was secured, this estate is steeped in tales of the past.

In 1925, the house and its accompanying 16 acres were rescued by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and generously bestowed upon the state for preservation. Today, the mansion stands as a timeless representation of a prosperous mid-19th century plantation, inviting visitors to step back in time. Immerse yourself in the era with guided tours offered six times a day from Thursday to Monday, unveiling the rich heritage within. Enjoy a leisurely meal at the picnic tables scattered across the meticulously landscaped grounds.

The visitor center, a treasure trove of information, awaits your exploration from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 to 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday, offering insights into the property’s past. Please note that it remains closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day, preserving the holiday spirit.
