Welcome to Historic Santos Recreation Area

Welcome to the captivating Historic Santos Recreation Area! Nestled in an area rich with history, this park stands proudly on the grounds of a cherished African-American community. The park’s roots are intertwined with the trials and triumphs of its original settlers, many of whom were uprooted in the 1930s to make way for the ambitious yet short-lived Cross Florida Ship Canal project during the Great Depression. This endeavor, championed by President Franklin Roosevelt, aimed to provide employment for thousands of workers during a challenging time in American history.

Today, Historic Santos Recreation Area stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. Visitors can explore a variety of amenities, including a multi-use sports field that pays homage to a former Negro League baseball field, a basketball court for friendly competitions, inviting picnic pavilions for gatherings, and a convenient restroom facility with fresh water. Each year, the park hosts a lively celebration on the last Saturday of February, bringing together residents of Historic Santos and park service members to commemorate the area’s legacy.

Conveniently located just east of U.S. 441 on Southeast 80th Street, in close proximity to the Marion County Sheriff’s station, Historic Santos Recreation Area offers a welcoming escape in the heart of its historical surroundings. Come and experience the beauty and heritage of this special place!
