Close to eight centuries ago, Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park was home to Native Americans near Tallahassee. It used to be a part of the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex.

Presently, this park safeguards six out of the seven earthen temple mounds ever found. The tallest mound stands at 278 feet by 312 feet at the base, towering approximately 36 feet high.

The settlement nestled at the foot of these mounds served as a hub for culture, religion, and people between 1100 and 1500 AD. Lake Jackson retains traces of Florida’s Territorial Period, and early statehood (1825-1860) when Colonel Robert Butler owned a vast estate here.

Traces of an 1800s grist mill can still be spotted in the creek bed, visible while walking the interpretive trail.
