Established in 1982 with land acquired by Florida’s Conservation and Recreational Lands program, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park spans 2,421 acres on the northern third of Key Largo. The park honors the legacy of Dagny Johnson, a passionate local environmental activist, named approximately one year prior to her passing in 2003.

Throughout the 1970s-90s, Johnson played a key role in leading environmental organizations such as the Upper Keys Citizens Association and the Izaak Walton League. Their advocacy efforts aimed to thwart the planned development in north Key Largo, ensuring the preservation of onshore communities and protecting the vital coral reefs from the adverse impacts of land development.
