Maclay Gardens State Park was established by Alfred Maclay, a wealthy banker and financier from New York, who, along with his wife, Louise Fleischmann Maclay, fell in love with the majestic oaks, pines, dogwoods, and hollies of Tallahassee during their visit in 1923. Recognizing the potential of this place, he decided to fulfill his dream of creating a stunning garden and making it their winter retreat. Over time, they cultivated one of Florida’s most exquisite ornamental gardens.

Today, Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park stands as a testament to floral architecture, boasting a charming brick pathway, a secluded secret garden, a tranquil reflection pool, a captivating walled garden, and an abundance of camellias and azaleas.

In 1953, following Mr. Maclay’s passing nine years earlier, Mrs. Maclay and her children generously gifted the gardens to the state of Florida. She expressed her desire for the gardens to always honor her husband’s legacy and remain accessible to the public for the delight of Floridians and visitors alike.
