Bald Point State Park, home to the earliest known pottery in North America, has a rich history that dates back over 3,500 years. The Norwood pottery found at the park’s oldest site reveals insights into the lives of the Native American inhabitants who hunted, fished, and thrived on the coast’s abundant resources.
During the 1800s and 1900s, fishermen at Bald Point established seineyards, where they would hang, dry, and repair nets in primitive campsites along the coast.
The remnants of the turpentine industry from the 19th to the 20th century can still be seen today, with large pine trees bearing ‘cat face’ scars as evidence of the once thriving industry.
